SUMMARY:Remembrance Sunday
DESCRIPTION:  \nMembers of the Institution will lay wreaths at various Remembrance events as they represent the Institution at Church and Civic Events. As with other years\, we work closely with the Royal British Legion to mark Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day\, and we as an Institution pay our respects to those who served and sacrificed. \n \nWe remind members to take the opportunity of the National Minutes silence at 11 am on 11 November for their own quiet reflection wherever they are. The Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall traditionally starts a weekend of commemoration with events on Remembrance Sunday at various cenotaphs and churches. \nJoin with us as we mark this time of national remembrance and also look back at other years when we organised events from parades to our own Festival of Remembrance

SUMMARY:Remember Remember the Fifth of November
DESCRIPTION:Remember remember the Fifth of November\, Gunpowder treason and Plot\n \nFor centuries the people of Britain were required by law to commemorate the Gunpowder Treason plot and to give thanks to God for his deliverance of the King\, Lords and Parliament. Parliament met in January 1606 and passed the Thanksgiving Act. This made services and sermons commemorating the plot a regular annual feature each 5 November. \nThousands of sermons were delivered on that date over the next two centuries and hundreds of them were published. The tradition grew of marking the day with the ringing of church bells and bonfires. Fireworks were also included in some of the earliest celebrations. \nFollowing the capture of Guy Fawkes on 5th November 1605 and the arrest of his fellow conspirators\, the Government responded immediately to this attempt to blow up the King and Parliament. \n  \n\nAn Act entitled ‘An Acte for a publique Thancksgiving to Almighty God everie yeere of the Fifte day of November’ was passed in January 1606 This proclaimed the discovery of the Gunpowder Plot should ‘be held in a perpetual Remembrance’ and that the day be ‘a holiday for ever in thankfulness to God for the deliverance and detestation of the Papists’. This annual ‘remembrance’ was to be marked by a morning service in every parish church at which a special prayer of thanksgiving was to be offered up.\n\n\n\nThese celebrations were always more lively when people saw a present Catholic threat. The custom of burning effigies of the Pope\, or the devil\, seems to have begun in the reign of Charles I (1625-49) and became more popular during the crisis over the succession of James II in 1678-81. It was only later that Guy Fawkes replaced the Pope as the figure burned on the 5 November bonfires. It became a night when Protestants across Britain reflected on events of the past and how they were preserved from a number of Catholic terrorist plots and coup d’etats. \nToday the tradition continues in England primarily\, with Bonfire night and the burning of the Guy. Children create a guy to be burnt in effigy to accompany the collection of money and firewood on Bonfire Night. This is a tradition that thrives in British playgrounds\, parks and streets to this day. \n\nBonfire Prayers \nRemember\, remember the Fifth of November\nThe Gunpowder Treason and plot\,\nI see no reason why Gunpowder Treason\nShould ever be forgot. \nGuy Fawkes\, Guy Fawkes ’twas his intent\nTo blow up the King and the Parliament\,\nThree score barrels of powder below\nPoor old England to overthrow. \nBy God’s providence he was catch’d\nWith a dark lantern and burning match\,\nHoller boys\, holler boys\, ring bells ring\nHoller boys\, holler boys\, God Save the King! \nA penny loaf to feed the Pope\nA farthing o’cheese to choke him\,\nA pint of beer to rinse it down\nA faggot of sticks to burn him. \nBurn him in a tub of tar\nBurn him like a blazing star\,\nBurn his body from his head\nThen we’ll say old Pope is dead. \nHip Hip Hoorah!\nHip Hip Hoorah!\nHip Hip Hoorah! \n

SUMMARY:King William's Birthday
DESCRIPTION:Almost as soon as the smoke of battle had cleared and the capital of Ireland was back under Williamite control the city began planning one of the biggest celebrations it had ever seen. The Government of the day began planning a birthday party for the King\, as a tribute to their great Deliverer\, as a sign of their loyalty\, to give thanks to God for his help and to show their resolve to win the war that was still raging in the west of Ireland. \nAs an Institution dedicated to the memory of King William III Prince of Orange\, we continue those celebrations of his birthday. Indeed at one time its celebration and the commemoration of his landing in England on 5 November gave rise to a double celebration which for many years was a civic event established by law. Dublin became a centre for these celebrations and the equestrian statue of King William at College Green in front of Trinity College hosted annual parades and celebrations which first began on 4 November 1690\, King Williams’s fortieth birthday. \nDespite the sectarian attacks on this display of loyalty and commemoration of our Glorious Heritage Orangemen across Ireland\, and indeed the world still remembers that great double celebration of 4-5 November. Many lodges hold meetings on that night with some even holding off installations of officers to ensure that it falls on or near that date. Toasts are still made and the event marked at dinners and private gatherings.

SUMMARY:Banners on the Bann
DESCRIPTION:Banners on the Bann is an innovative outdoor exhibition of Orange banners arranged to tell the story of our Protestant and Orange Heritage. \nOrange Banners evolved from large flags which were common in the later 1800s and right into the early Twentieth Century. Their origins lie in the tradition of regimental colours\, carried to identify and provide a rallying point for different units in battle. The military origins of the Orange Order meant that lodges adopted the carrying of colours when on parade.  \nThese traditionally carry mottoes\, the name and location of the lodge and over time saw the addition of elaborate works of art. Tradition holds that King William is on the front\, with the lodge symbolically still marching behind their king. However the reverse is very much up to the democratic decision of the lodge. Many choose a Biblical story to illustrate their Christian faith\, others an image symbolising their Protestant Heritage such as a reformer or Martyr\, and some choose an image representing British History. Often these elaborate works of art on a grand scale are reproductions of a famous painting and they represent community art at its finest. \nThis year these banners will not only be on parade leading lodges but we will also showcase them in a unique outdoor art gallery. They will form the backdrop to our Twelfth Platform and Field\, and we encourage the crowds to visit our open air exhibition and enjoy not only on the artistry and skill of the banner painters and makers but also to reflect on the messages and meanings behind the images. \nWatch and learn the meaning and message behind each banner and the stories of how they are made. Often as they are paraded each year spectators don’t have the time to study each banner as one follows fast upon another. So take your time this year as we show a selection of our lodges banners and build an exhibition which will not only tell the story of each lodge but build to tell the whole story of our faith\, history and Orange story.

SUMMARY:Twelfth Day Programme
DESCRIPTION:The day begins for at home getting ready\, a good breakfast and daily devotions before setting off to the Orange Hall. The Hall on a Twelfth morning is an exciting busy scene as instruments get tuned\, lodges meeting\,  and plans set. Then most lodges parade in their own areas in the morning\, called feeder parades before making their way by bus or car to the main demonstration. \n \nThen lodges parade to the Assembly Field\, on the Town Hill Road\, Portglenone (Point 9 on the map) from 1130 – 12 noon\, where many find time for lunch to set them up for the main parade. It’s a great time to catch up with folk you haven’t seen since this time last year. \nThe Assembly field will have Outdoor Caterers and Toilet facilities as well as parking\, however priority will be given to lodge vehicles. \nWhile the general public is very welcome in the Assembly Field many prefer to pick their spot along the parade route which will include the Townhill Road\, Main Street over the Bann bridge along the Clady Road to the Main Demonstration Field on the Right Hand side.  The village has ample parking for example at First Portglenone Presbyterian Church (Point 1 on the map) as well as the Main Street itself. The Main Street is the best vantage point and as the route is relatively short it is possible to watch the parade then walk or drive to the Twelfth Field. \nThe Main Parade will step off at 1300 taking around an hour to make its way to the Twelfth Field (Point 8 on the map). The Fun Fair\, and family picnic areas will be open from 1330 throughout the day and ample free car parking will be available for all. The field has been designed with different zones with the main platform being the focal point for events through out the day. \n \nTimes for the Twelfth  \n1300  – Parade Steps off from Assembly Field \n1400  – Parade Arrives at Twelfth Field \nFun Fair\, and Family Picnic Areas will be open from 1330 \n1430 – Lambeg Drum Tattoo \n1445 – Launch of King William III\, Life & Legacy Programme \n1500 – Platform Proceedings begin with Worship led by Killycoogan Accordian Band \nThe proceedings include a Welcome address\, Resolutions and Speeches \n1600 – Proceedings will be closed with the National Anthem \n1630 – Return Parade will form up \n1750 – Parade back to Assembly Point and Disperse

SUMMARY:Eleventh Family Fun Night
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Many of us begin our Twelfth celebrations with the traditional Eleventh Night Bonfires. These community events are often organised by the younger members of our community\, who have been collecting wood for weeks even months and stacking it high. These structures are impressive in themselves reaching up and up with row upon row of pallets. Out in the country we do things slightly differently so why not join us at McNeillstown this Eleventh from 7pm for some food and family fun before the bonfire it lit. \n  \nLearn About the History of Bonfires \nThey are an annual tradition which goes right back to primitive times when communities used fire as a symbol\, as a warning of approaching danger or as a means to celebrate important events. The Bonfire first entered Protestant culture as a horrific reminder of the martyr’s pyres which had been built by Bloody Queen Mary as she burnt Protestant Reformers to death for their faith. It was next used to give thanks and to commemorate the survival of our Protestant Parliament from the terrorist designs of Guy Fawkes. It was at this point the idea of burning a traitor or enemy in effigy became popular. It then became a beacon of hope signalling the Prince of Orange’s Arrival on our shores. \nFires were lit along hillsides to mark King William’s landing in England and Ireland and still to this day we mark our Great Deliverance at the Battle of the Boyne with the bonfire.\nThis year the bonfires will be much smaller and more in the form of BBQs in the backyard. So why n to gather the family and enjoy the crackle of the fire and some music as we wait the big day. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Somme Drumhead Service
DESCRIPTION:Portglenone Independent Orange District No. 4 will hold their Annual Drumhead Service on Sunday 29th June 2025.  \nThe annual event will form part of our Banntastic Twelfth Festival programme and marks the start of our countdown to the Twelfth.  \nThe event has become synonymous with the Battle of the Somme will pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of local men who went from the banks of the Bann to the banks of the Somme.  It marks the start of our District’s Twelfth events. \nThe Drumhead Service is a traditional military institution often held on the eve of battle. \nIt provides a moment of ‘coming together’ with structure and familiarity to the fore\, where God’s blessing and protection are sought.  \nGiven the close affiliation between the Orange Institution and the military it is a fitting way for us to conduct our devotions.  \nThe Service will be held at Portglenone Marina\, Gortgole Road\, Portglenone at 3.30pm.  Brethren will muster at Townhill Road at 3.00pm and parade the village to the Service. \n

SUMMARY:VE Day Parade
DESCRIPTION:All members of the Loyal Orders local Bands and the general public are invited to join us for a VE Day Parade. It’s our traditional way of marking the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Europe. It will follow in the tradition of parades held in support of the war effort such as the ‘Salute the Soldier’ initiative launched to boost the war effort and raise much needed funds. Towns and villages across the UK pledged to raise funds and the parade of servicemen and other emergency service was the centrepiece. \nLocally Portglenone held their parade on 9 May 1944 followed by a fundraising dance ensuring that the village and local area exceeded their target of £10\,000. When the war ended parades of course resumed and Thanksgiving Services were held locally often preceded by a parade. \nOur parade therefore is to honour not only the men and women ion the armed forces but those who played a valuable role on the home front and those who raised funds and morale\, took in evacuated children and kept the country running in the face of total war. \nWe request all members of the Loyal Orders wear their colours and also invite families and children to join us and if they are members of uniformed youth organisations they will be most welcome in their uniforms. \nThe parade will form up at McNeillstown Orange Hall at the junction with the Lisnahunshin Road and Blackstone Road\, parading to McNeillstown Independent Orange Hall. Here refreshments will be served and an exhibition and War themed activities will entertain and educate until 9pm when a short Act of Commemoration and Service of Thanksgiving will be conducted before the Beacon Lighting at 9.30 pm in line with the rest of the VE Day Beacons across the UK

SUMMARY:Remember November
DESCRIPTION:November has a number of national days of Commemoration and Remembrance\, and as we move beyond these most recognisable days the ILOI have set aside November as a full month to Remember. It will provide an annual festival of Remembrance from joyous occasions such as the birthday of King William Prince of Orange to the more somber occasions of Armistice Day where we join with the nation in silence to remember the fallen in war. \nThis year we add to this calendar of commemoration our own thoughts and reflections on those who have died as a result of the Corona Pandemic\, and those in the forefront of the battle against this silent enemy. \nThere are many events in our own history which we would do well to remember such as the 1641 Rebellion and Massacres which our Institution has done much to mark over the decades.

SUMMARY:Reformation Day
DESCRIPTION:  \nRemembering the Reformation\nAs part of our Reformation commemoration events\, we will be looking at the Reformation and its Legacy Today. We have taken our events online and will be learning and remembering through Virtual Resources and Online material.\nReformation Day\nAt the time\, few would have suspected that the sound of a hammer striking the castle church door in Wittenberg\, Germany\, would soon be heard around the world and lead ultimately to the greatest transformation of Western society since the apostles first preached the Gospel throughout the Roman empire. Luther’s nailing of his ninety-five theses to the church door on October 31\, 1517\, provoked a debate that culminated finally in what we now call the Protestant Reformation. Historians still debate its origins and legacy\, however\, we believe it to be a great awakening of God and a move to revive faith and return from the error and superstition which had crept in. \nWe hope to be able to watch our Reformation Service on our Facebook page and enjoy our virtual exhibition which accompanies it\, so please engage with our resources. The Exhibition tells the exciting story of a monk who risked his life and shattered the strength of the Roman Catholic Church\, and a society that put sin up for sale – and the power of the printed word to challenge it all. The Reformation\, our latest exhibition reveals a series of events that changed the course of history forever. \nIn October 1517\, German monk and scholar Martin Luther began questioning the Catholic Church\, particularly for its sale of ‘indulgences’\, or sins that could be forgiven – for a price. Luther may have remained a little-known scholar but for the fact that his words took shape in printed form\, reaching thinkers all over the world – including radical scholar William Tyndale\, and one of history’s most notorious monarchs\, King Henry VIII. \nThe Reformation is a journey through these tumultuous times. Visitors can find out how Luther’s work led to the splintering of the Catholic Church across Europe\, and how Luther’s ideas went viral. Much like the digital communications revolution of the 21st century\, the invention of the printing press meant that news\, ideas and opinions could spread rapidly across the globe. \nThe Reformation explores the consequences and legacy of these events.

SUMMARY:Reformation Sunday Service
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n\nINDEPENDENT LOYAL ORANGE INSTITUTION\nAnnual Reformation Service\nAs Protestants\, we celebrate the tradition that grounds our faith on Reformation Sunday. It is always the last Sunday in October\, marking the occasion in 1517 when Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the church door in Wittenberg\, Germany. This event marked the beginning of the Reformation\, but it began with one man having the courage to follow his convictions and act upon what he believed. We would urge all members and friends to consider joining us in what will be a socially distanced and specially organised service to give thanks to God for his hand in history. \nIf you are planning on attending\, please check our social media in the days preceding to ensure that the event will be going ahead and any steps you will be required to take for your own and the safety of others. Due to the fast-changing situation and our determination to adhere to any government guidelines\, we may have to make a final decision in the week preceding the event. \nWe hope to be able to stream this event live on our Facebook page and a virtual exhibition will accompany it\, so please engage with our resources and if you are unable to attend\, set aside that time on that Sunday to join with us virtually. the speak will be the Rev David Park\, Ballymoney and we encourage members and visiting brethren to attend in regalia.
