SUMMARY:Remember November
DESCRIPTION:November has a number of national days of Commemoration and Remembrance\, and as we move beyond these most recognisable days the ILOI have set aside November as a full month to Remember. It will provide an annual festival of Remembrance from joyous occasions such as the birthday of King William Prince of Orange to the more somber occasions of Armistice Day where we join with the nation in silence to remember the fallen in war. \nThere are many events in our own history which we would do well to remember such as the 1641 Rebellion and Massacres which our Institution has done much to mark over the decades. \n  \nIn recent years Portglenone District led by McNeillstown True Blues ILOI No. 46 have revived the traditional Protestant Williamite holidays of 4th and 5th of November and developed a longer Remember November Festival. To explain the significance and importance of Remembrance and to list the dates incorporated in the Festival we quote from the Order of Service from the event. \nCentral to our Remember November Festival is of course remembrance\, it is something which we have a very clear Biblical mandate to do. Our motto is “ Thou shalt remember the Lord thy God” Deut 8.18\nWe have chosen this time of year because so many important anniversaries in our British Protestant national calendar fall over these few weeks. As we mark these dates we remember those whose lives were lost as a result of the events we remember. We pay tribute to the Protestant Martyrs\, and we pray that our courage in defence of our faith would burn as brightly as theirs. Our bonfires and any effigies we burn are just that – symbols as we condemn the Church of Rome who actually burnt men and women at the stake for their Protestant faith. However our horror turns to hope as we recall the words of Bishop Hugh Latimer to his friend Bishop Nicholas Ridley as the flames rose “Be of good comfort\, Master Ridley; and play the man. We shall this day light such a candle\, by God’s grace in England\, as I trust shall never be put out.” \n16 October 1555 – The Martyrdom of Latimer and Ridley the Oxford Martyrs\, which is proudly displayed on our Lodge Banner in memory of all the Protestant martyrs.\n21 October 1805 – Trafalgar Day\, which celebrates the victory by the British Royal Navy led by Vice- Admiral Horatio Nelson over France at the Battle of Trafalgar.\n23 October 1641 – The 1641 Rebellion which saw the massacre of tens of thousands of Protestants across Ireland with one atrocities in this area like the January 1642 Porta Massacre near Kilrea\, Clough Castle and the Ravel river and the notorious Black Friday or the Battle of the Laney February 1642.\n31 October 1517 – Reformation Day\, marking Martin Luther posting his Ninety-five theses to the church door in Wittenberg which sparked the Protestant Reformation.\n3 November 1534- Act of Supremacy\, declaring King Henry VIII the “Supreme Head of the Church of England” officially separating from the church of Rome\n4 November 1650 – Birthday of King William III\, Prince of Orange at the Hague in Holland\n5 November 1606 – Gunpowder Treason Day\, otherwise known as the Jesuit Treason when the plot to blow up the King and Parliament was discovered and foiled .\n5 November 1688 – The Landing of King William III in Britain and the start of the Glorious Revolution\n11 November 1918 – Armistice Day marking the end of the Great War and Remembrance Sunday marking the service and sacrifice of all our armed forces in all conflicts.\n19 November 1620 – Thanksgiving Day Mayflower arrives in America\, with the The Pilgrim Fathers\, a group of Protestants who moved for religious freedom\n29 November 1588 – Defeat of the Spanish Armada \nWe will use the order of service which was given in 1688 to celebrate the landing of King William III\, Prince Of Orange with the scriptures and prayers given at that time\, to give thanks to Almighty God and finish with the acts of remembrance we are more familiar with associated with Remembrance Sunday. \nPsalm 100 may be sung or recited or the following verses from the Psalms \nO Give thanks unto the Lord for he is gracious: and his mercy endureth for ever. Psal. cvii. 1 
    Let them give thanks whom the Lord hath redeemed: and delivered from the hand of the enemy. Ver. 2 
    Many a time have they fought against me from my youth up: may Israel now say. Ps. cxxix. 1 
    Yea\, many a time have they vexed me from my youth up: but they have not prevailed against me. Ver. 2

SUMMARY:King William's Birthday
DESCRIPTION:Almost as soon as the smoke of battle had cleared and the capital of Ireland was back under Williamite control the city began planning one of the biggest celebrations it had ever seen. The Government of the day began planning a birthday party for the King\, as a tribute to their great Deliverer\, as a sign of their loyalty\, to give thanks to God for his help and to show their resolve to win the war that was still raging in the west of Ireland. \nAs an Institution dedicated to the memory of King William III Prince of Orange\, we continue those celebrations of his birthday. Indeed at one time its celebration and the commemoration of his landing in England on 5 November gave rise to a double celebration which for many years was a civic event established by law. Dublin became a centre for these celebrations and the equestrian statue of King William at College Green in front of Trinity College hosted annual parades and celebrations which first began on 4 November 1690\, King Williams’s fortieth birthday. \nDespite the sectarian attacks on this display of loyalty and commemoration of our Glorious Heritage Orangemen across Ireland\, and indeed the world still remembers that great double celebration of 4-5 November. Many lodges hold meetings on that night with some even holding off installations of officers to ensure that it falls on or near that date. Toasts are still made and the event marked at dinners and private gatherings.

DESCRIPTION:Wyck\, Jan; William III Landing at Brixham\, Torbay\, 5 November 1688; National Maritime Museum; http://www.artuk.org/artworks/william-iii-landing-at-brixham-torbay-5-november-1688-176186\nThe Glorious Fifth – the Fifth of November\nThe Glorious Revolution of 1688\, which shaped our Parliamentary Democratic Constitution and ensured a foundation for the freedoms we still enjoy today began when William Prince of Orange set foot in England on 5 November 1688. \nThe landing has been marked since and this year we will be going online to commemorate the events leading up to Williams successful claim to the throne. While known as the bloodless revolutions and aside from the Battle of Reading there were no real battles in England\, we are well aware of the loss of life and the sacrifices made by his supporters in Ireland. \nThe Glorious 5th November marks not only this Great Deliverance from ‘Popery and Arbitrary Power’ with the creation of a balanced Constitutional monarchy with the place of Parliament established and the path to democracy set; but also the deliverance from the Gunpowder Plot earlier in the century. \nTraditionally Orange Lodges would meet on or close to this date to commemorate the events\, that double deliverance of what was to become our British democracy. With COVID Restrictions we are taking this opportunity to mark this traditional anniversary at home with a commemorative dinner and then a traditional bonfire night.

SUMMARY:Remember Remember the Fifth of November
DESCRIPTION:Remember remember the Fifth of November\, Gunpowder treason and Plot\n \nFor centuries the people of Britain were required by law to commemorate the Gunpowder Treason plot and to give thanks to God for his deliverance of the King\, Lords and Parliament. Parliament met in January 1606 and passed the Thanksgiving Act. This made services and sermons commemorating the plot a regular annual feature each 5 November. \nThousands of sermons were delivered on that date over the next two centuries and hundreds of them were published. The tradition grew of marking the day with the ringing of church bells and bonfires. Fireworks were also included in some of the earliest celebrations. \nFollowing the capture of Guy Fawkes on 5th November 1605 and the arrest of his fellow conspirators\, the Government responded immediately to this attempt to blow up the King and Parliament. \n  \n\nAn Act entitled ‘An Acte for a publique Thancksgiving to Almighty God everie yeere of the Fifte day of November’ was passed in January 1606 This proclaimed the discovery of the Gunpowder Plot should ‘be held in a perpetual Remembrance’ and that the day be ‘a holiday for ever in thankfulness to God for the deliverance and detestation of the Papists’. This annual ‘remembrance’ was to be marked by a morning service in every parish church at which a special prayer of thanksgiving was to be offered up.\n\n\n\nThese celebrations were always more lively when people saw a present Catholic threat. The custom of burning effigies of the Pope\, or the devil\, seems to have begun in the reign of Charles I (1625-49) and became more popular during the crisis over the succession of James II in 1678-81. It was only later that Guy Fawkes replaced the Pope as the figure burned on the 5 November bonfires. It became a night when Protestants across Britain reflected on events of the past and how they were preserved from a number of Catholic terrorist plots and coup d’etats. \nToday the tradition continues in England primarily\, with Bonfire night and the burning of the Guy. Children create a guy to be burnt in effigy to accompany the collection of money and firewood on Bonfire Night. DESCRIPTION:  \nMembers of the Institution will lay wreaths at various Remembrance events as they represent the Institution at Church and Civic Events. As with other years\, we work closely with the Royal British Legion to mark Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day\, and we as an Institution pay our respects to those who served and sacrificed. \n \nWe remind members to take the opportunity of the National Minutes silence at 11 am on 11 November for their own quiet reflection wherever they are. The Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall traditionally starts a weekend of commemoration with events on Remembrance Sunday at various cenotaphs and churches. \nJoin with us as we mark this time of national remembrance and also look back at other years when we organised events from parades to our own Festival of Remembrance
