DESCRIPTION:Portglenone Independent Orange District No. 4 will hold their Annual Drumhead Service on Sunday 29th June 2025.  \nThe annual event will form part of our Banntastic Twelfth Festival programme and marks the start of our countdown to the Twelfth.  \nThe event has become synonymous with the Battle of the Somme will pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of local men who went from the banks of the Bann to the banks of the Somme.  It marks the start of our District’s Twelfth events. \nThe Drumhead Service is a traditional military institution often held on the eve of battle. \nIt provides a moment of ‘coming together’ with structure and familiarity to the fore\, where God’s blessing and protection are sought.  \nGiven the close affiliation between the Orange Institution and the military it is a fitting way for us to conduct our devotions.  \nThe Service will be held at Portglenone Marina\, Gortgole Road\, Portglenone at 3.30pm.  Brethren will muster at Townhill Road at 3.00pm and parade the village to the Service. \n

SUMMARY:VE Day Parade
DESCRIPTION:All members of the Loyal Orders local Bands and the general public are invited to join us for a VE Day Parade. It’s our traditional way of marking the 80th Anniversary of Victory in Europe. It will follow in the tradition of parades held in support of the war effort such as the ‘Salute the Soldier’ initiative launched to boost the war effort and raise much needed funds. Towns and villages across the UK pledged to raise funds and the parade of servicemen and other emergency service was the centrepiece. \nLocally Portglenone held their parade on 9 May 1944 followed by a fundraising dance ensuring that the village and local area exceeded their target of £10\,000. When the war ended parades of course resumed and Thanksgiving Services were held locally often preceded by a parade. \nOur parade therefore is to honour not only the men and women ion the armed forces but those who played a valuable role on the home front and those who raised funds and morale\, took in evacuated children and kept the country running in the face of total war. \nWe request all members of the Loyal Orders wear their colours and also invite families and children to join us and if they are members of uniformed youth organisations they will be most welcome in their uniforms. \nThe parade will form up at McNeillstown Orange Hall at the junction with the Lisnahunshin Road and Blackstone Road\, parading to McNeillstown Independent Orange Hall. Here refreshments will be served and an exhibition and War themed activities will entertain and educate until 9pm when a short Act of Commemoration and Service of Thanksgiving will be conducted before the Beacon Lighting at 9.30 pm in line with the rest of the VE Day Beacons across the UK

As part of the ILOI programme of events to mark the 80th Anniversary of the end of the war the event will include entertainment and an exhibition. \nIt will see members of our Junior Lodge host and exhibition of Second World War Memorabilia and Artefacts. In a wonderful turn of events our young people will be education us on the past and helping to give a real feel for the events of 80 years ago. \nThere will be a children’s corner with crafts and games and for older children and all those kids at heart a Virtual reality simulator where you can experience the fighting conditions of the War. \nMusical entertainment and of course a traditional afternoon tea will remind us of the past – except there will be no rationing at this event! \n

DESCRIPTION:November has a number of national days of Commemoration and Remembrance\, and as we move beyond these most recognisable days the ILOI have set aside November as a full month to Remember. It will provide an annual festival of Remembrance from joyous occasions such as the birthday of King William Prince of Orange to the more somber occasions of Armistice Day where we join with the nation in silence to remember the fallen in war. \nThis year we add to this calendar of commemoration our own thoughts and reflections on those who have died as a result of the Corona Pandemic\, and those in the forefront of the battle against this silent enemy. \nThere are many events in our own history which we would do well to remember such as the 1641 Rebellion and Massacres which our Institution has done much to mark over the decades.

DESCRIPTION:  \nRemembering the Reformation\nAs part of our Reformation commemoration events\, we will be looking at the Reformation and its Legacy Today. We have taken our events online and will be learning and remembering through Virtual Resources and Online material.\nReformation Day\nAt the time\, few would have suspected that the sound of a hammer striking the castle church door in Wittenberg\, Germany\, would soon be heard around the world and lead ultimately to the greatest transformation of Western society since the apostles first preached the Gospel throughout the Roman empire. Luther’s nailing of his ninety-five theses to the church door on October 31\, 1517\, provoked a debate that culminated finally in what we now call the Protestant Reformation. Historians still debate its origins and legacy\, however\, we believe it to be a great awakening of God and a move to revive faith and return from the error and superstition which had crept in. \nWe hope to be able to watch our Reformation Service on our Facebook page and enjoy our virtual exhibition which accompanies it\, so please engage with our resources. The Exhibition tells the exciting story of a monk who risked his life and shattered the strength of the Roman Catholic Church\, and a society that put sin up for sale – and the power of the printed word to challenge it all. The Reformation\, our latest exhibition reveals a series of events that changed the course of history forever. \nIn October 1517\, German monk and scholar Martin Luther began questioning the Catholic Church\, particularly for its sale of ‘indulgences’\, or sins that could be forgiven – for a price. Luther may have remained a little-known scholar but for the fact that his words took shape in printed form\, reaching thinkers all over the world – including radical scholar William Tyndale\, and one of history’s most notorious monarchs\, King Henry VIII. \nThe Reformation is a journey through these tumultuous times. Visitors can find out how Luther’s work led to the splintering of the Catholic Church across Europe\, and how Luther’s ideas went viral. Much like the digital communications revolution of the 21st century\, the invention of the printing press meant that news\, ideas and opinions could spread rapidly across the globe. \nThe Reformation explores the consequences and legacy of these events.

DESCRIPTION:  \n \n\nINDEPENDENT LOYAL ORANGE INSTITUTION\nAnnual Reformation Service\nAs Protestants\, we celebrate the tradition that grounds our faith on Reformation Sunday. It is always the last Sunday in October\, marking the occasion in 1517 when Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the church door in Wittenberg\, Germany. This event marked the beginning of the Reformation\, but it began with one man having the courage to follow his convictions and act upon what he believed. We would urge all members and friends to consider joining us in what will be a socially distanced and specially organised service to give thanks to God for his hand in history. \nIf you are planning on attending\, please check our social media in the days preceding to ensure that the event will be going ahead and any steps you will be required to take for your own and the safety of others. DESCRIPTION:As part of our 120th Anniversary Celebrations we have developed an Independent Orange Heritage Tour of Belfast \nOne of the themes of our Anniversary Year is “Why the I” a programme to help our members and the wider community understand the history and legacy of the Order. \nAs we attract new members and encourage and engage existing ones we need to know our history and the reasons why the Independent Institution was formed. We also need to know what makes us distinct and how we differ from other Loyal Orders. The heritage tour will visit some of the iconic sites associated with the early Independent Order and rediscover the founding fathers and what motivated them. It will also discover the lasting legacy of the ILOI in Belfast and hopefully stimulate interest that will see its revival in the city. \nDiscover something new and develop a sense of pride in who we are! \n\n\n\n\n \n  \nTour Information Saturday 23 September \n\n\n\n\nBus leaves Ballymoney\, Seymour Street\nStopping at Ballymena ( possibly other points on A26)\nArrive Titanic Quarter\, Belfast\nTea/Coffee on arrival and opportunity to visit Titanic Centre ( not the full tour) \n \nEye to I Tour of sites related to the Foundation of the ILOI in Belfast including the shipyards\, Custom House Sq. DESCRIPTION:Wyck\, Jan; William III Landing at Brixham\, Torbay\, 5 November 1688; National Maritime Museum; http://www.artuk.org/artworks/william-iii-landing-at-brixham-torbay-5-november-1688-176186\nThe Glorious Fifth – the Fifth of November\nThe Glorious Revolution of 1688\, which shaped our Parliamentary Democratic Constitution and ensured a foundation for the freedoms we still enjoy today began when William Prince of Orange set foot in England on 5 November 1688. \nThe landing has been marked since and this year we will be going online to commemorate the events leading up to Williams successful claim to the throne. While known as the bloodless revolutions and aside from the Battle of Reading there were no real battles in England\, we are well aware of the loss of life and the sacrifices made by his supporters in Ireland. \nThe Glorious 5th November marks not only this Great Deliverance from ‘Popery and Arbitrary Power’ with the creation of a balanced Constitutional monarchy with the place of Parliament established and the path to democracy set; but also the deliverance from the Gunpowder Plot earlier in the century. \nTraditionally Orange Lodges would meet on or close to this date to commemorate the events\, that double deliverance of what was to become our British democracy. With COVID Restrictions we are taking this opportunity to mark this traditional anniversary at home with a commemorative dinner and then a traditional bonfire night.

DESCRIPTION:The Institution have accepted an invitation from the Grand Orange lodge of Ireland to attend the postponed  from Stormont to Belfast City Hall. As the last of the large scale Decade of Centenary Events we are running busses from Ballymoney stopping at Ballymena for lodges and supporters. \n \nFollowing a meeting with the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland CentenNIal parade organisers it has been decided that our busses for the event on Saturday 28th May need to leave Seymour Street Ballymoney at 9:00am as all busses need to be in and out of the Stormont Estate by 11:00am. Platform proceedings will commence at 12:00 noon and Parade will follow at 1:00 pm. Food\, toilet facilities and platform proceedings will be available throughout the Stormont Estate. A large mini-bus will be with us in parade to carry those unable to walk. \nCome out and show your support for our wee country and lets remind everyone of its proud history. \n
