Celebrating the Birth and Legacy of King William III: Launching the “William III Life and Legacy” Programme
On this 4th of November, the Independent Loyal Orange Institution proudly commemorates the 350th Anniversary of the birth of King William III, Prince of Orange, born on this day in 1650. As we honour his enduring legacy, we also launch our year-long initiative: “William III: Life and Legacy”, a programme dedicated to exploring, educating, and celebrating the man whose courage and convictions reshaped the British Isles and safeguarded Protestant liberty.

A Royal Birth in Tumultuous Times
William Henry of Orange was born on 4 November 1650 in The Hague, Dutch Republic, just days after the death of his father, William II, Prince of Orange. His mother, Mary Stuart, was the daughter of King Charles I of England, making William a grandson of the British monarchy and a child of both Dutch and British royal lines.
Raised amid political uncertainty and religious tension, William’s early life was shaped by the struggle between Protestant and Catholic powers across Europe. His education and upbringing prepared him for leadership in a time when the future of Protestantism was anything but secure.
Defender of Protestant Liberty
William’s marriage to Mary Stuart, daughter of James II of England, positioned him at the heart of British succession. But when James II’s Catholic absolutism threatened the Protestant establishment, William answered the call of English nobles and landed at Brixham, Devon on 5 November 1688—a momentous event now known as the Glorious Revolution.
His arrival marked the beginning of a new constitutional era. By 1689, William and Mary were crowned joint monarchs, and with the Bill of Rights, they enshrined parliamentary supremacy and Protestant succession. William’s reign secured religious freedom for Protestants and laid the foundation for modern constitutional monarchy.
Why We Celebrate the 4th and 5th of November
The Independent Orange Order continues to mark 4 November as a day of thanksgiving for William’s birth—a providential moment that would later shape the destiny of Britain and Ireland. 5 November, the anniversary of his landing, is celebrated as the dawn of liberty, when tyranny was turned back and the Protestant cause vindicated.
These dates are not mere historical footnotes—they are living reminders of our heritage, our freedoms, and our duty to uphold the principles William fought for.
Launching the “William III: Life and Legacy” Programme
This year, the Independent Loyal Orange Institution will host a series of events, publications, exhibitions, and educational resources under the banner of “William III: Life and Legacy”. Highlights include:
- Historical lectures and panel discussions on William’s European campaigns and constitutional impact
- Commemorative exhibitions featuring artefacts, portraits, and documents from the Glorious Revolution
- Youth engagement projects exploring William’s legacy through art, storytelling, and debate
- Special services and parades on 4 and 5 November 2025 to honour his memory and reaffirm our commitment to Protestant liberty

A Legacy Worth Defending
William III’s life was marked by sacrifice, vision, and unwavering commitment to the Protestant cause. His legacy lives on in our institutions, our freedoms, and our faith. As we launch this programme, we invite all members and supporters to reflect, participate, and share in the celebration of a man whose birth and deeds continue to inspire.
Let us remember: “The Protestant religion and liberties of England I will maintain.” — King William III
