Thomas Henry Sloan became a Member of Parliament for South Belfast in 1902. He fought two sucessful elections and held his seat for two terms. The postcard was an early form of election material and showed the way which Sloan and his election machine promoted him. The picture is of a young Sloan in his Independent Orange sash. The flags are the Royal Standard and Union Flag with Crowns completing the imagery which shows Sloan as staunch Royalist and Unionist.
It is fitting that Sloan should be found there, he was a Parliamentary pioneer – the first independent, working-class politician, and champion of rights and a faith leader who fought for international peace and stability.
